
Congratulations to Professor Dennis McGonagle, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC): Leeds Musculoskeletal (MSK) Workstream Lead and Consultant Rheumatologist at Chapel Allerton Hospital, who has been awarded the prestigious Heberden Oration Award at the 2026 British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) Conference.
The Heberden Oration Award is one of the highest honours in rheumatology, recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions and advances within the field.
Professor McGonagle received the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to rheumatology research and innovation throughout his career. The achievement also marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first doctor from the Republic of Ireland to receive the award.
As MSK Workstream Lead for NIHR BRC: Leeds, Professor McGonagle has played a key role in advancing research focused on improving the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. His work has contributed to strengthening Leeds’ international reputation as a centre for excellence in rheumatology and inflammatory disease research.
The award reflects not only Professor McGonagle’s personal achievements, but also the collaborative work of the wider Leeds SpA and rheumatology research teams, whose research continues to improve care and outcomes for patients.
