Borsha Sarker qualified in 1989 from Manchester as a Diagnostic Radiographer and 1992 in Medical Ultrasound from St.Thomas’ Hospital and Kings College, London. She spent a year in vascular ultrasound research at St.Marys Hospital, Paddington working with Prof. Andrew Nicolaides, John Wolfe and Averil Mansfield and two years working in Sydney, Australia and travelling in the Asia Pacific region, before moving to the North East in 1995.

Borsha spent almost 20 years at the QE Gateshead managing the clinical vascular ultrasound service, regularly running and participating in educational vascular ultrasound courses and contributing to many research projects. In 2003 she won the Venous Forum Prize from the Royal Society of Medicine for a small grant funded project on the accuracy of diagnosing calf DVT. She contributed to the national portfolio TABUL study (Temporal Artery Biopsy versus Ultrasound) to diagnose Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA).

In 2016 she left and retrained in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound which brought her to the Leeds Biomedical Research Centre as a part time Research Sonographer, starting July 2018. Clinical research areas now include rheumatology, musculoskeletal, inflammatory arthritis and vasculitis (GCA).

She is currently an elected member of Council for the British Medical Ultrasound Society and in 2013 was the Chair of its successful 45th Annual Scientific Meeting at The Sage, Gateshead, which she gives as her greatest and most challenging professional undertaking.

Borsha has a particular interest in educating medical staff in both postgraduate and undergraduate settings in ultrasound skills. She has been involved in training staff in Emergency Medicine, ICU and Anaesthetics since 2002. In 2005 Borsha was awarded a travelling fellowship from BMUS and ASUM, to work in a major trauma centre in Liverpool, Sydney Australia, to examine the effectiveness of their Point of Care Ultrasound credentialling program. Borsha has also had university experience in vascular ultrasound module development, as an internal and external examiner, as well as practice mentor. Borsha was a certified Trade Union Representative for many years, with a special interest and qualifications in Employment Law.
