Professor Paul Emery OBE awarded EULAR Meritorious Award for outstanding service to Rheumatology

The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) represents the patient, health professional and scientific societies of Rheumatology of all the European nations. It is essentially the European College of Rheumatology. Every year thousands of stakeholders travel to the EULAR Annual Congress, however this year saw them attending virtually from the comfort of their own homes.

Every year, the EULAR Meritorious Award is awarded for outstanding service to Rheumatology in the EULAR Annual Congress Opening ceremony. It is EULAR’s highest award, and this year saw the Director of NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre, Professor Paul Emery OBE awarded it.

Professor Emery had the following to say about the Award and what it means to him, “I am highly honoured to receive the EULAR Meritorious award for outstanding service to Rheumatology. During 40 years of Rheumatology I have been fortunate to have seen, and be part of, a revolution in the management of patients with Rheumatic Diseases. I have also had the privilege of training many talented Rheumatologists, who will ensure the revolution continues. Whilst president of EULAR, I was able to initiate two movements: FOREUM (the Foundation for Rheumatology Research) and EMEUNET (the Network for emerging leaders), both of which flourish and make major contributions to our patients and the organisation. It is wonderful that Leeds has been honoured in this way”.
